Background.

Kakamega County is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya and borders Vihiga County to the South, Siaya County to the West, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia Counties to the North and Nandi and Uasin Gishu Counties to the East. The county is constituted of 12 constituencies, 60 wards and 1,497 polling stations. According to 2019 National Census Kakamega County has a population of 1,867,579and an covers an area of 3,033.8 km2.

In the last General election, the Kakamega County Governor position attracted 5 candidates namely, Oparanyah Wycliffe Ambetsa (Orange Democratic Movement), Khalwale Boni (Forum For Restoration Of Democracy-Kenya), Muruli Mable (Jubilee Party), Sakwa Michael Osundwa (Amani National Congress) and Kanyanya Suleiman Sumba (Kenya African National Union). After vote count H.E Oparanyah Wycliffe Ambetsa of ODM was declared governor after winning with 387,999 votes followed by Dr. Khalwale Boni of FORD-Kenya with 134,999.
